Mick & Ben

2020 Victoria Ride

Chain Reaction number 5

In March I will be completing my 5th Chain Reaction and raising money in honour of both my kids. In 2018/19, Ben went through an incredibly tough and challenging brain injury and surgery. Thanks to numerous visits to the Starlight Express Room and his surgeons, he is now fighting fit and helping us raise money (pics in the gallery).

In the last 12 months, Ben also lost a friend from his primary school whose family were supported by Very Special Kids - an equally amazing charity.

Gus also deserves a mention despite his perfect health! He has, however, been a huge support for both his little bro and his parents ... way beyond his 13 years.

PwC will be sending a 7-person team consisting of 5 PwC staff members – Rob Silverwood, Paul Tasker, Ellen Jones, Adam Davis and Mick Calder – plus two friends of the firm – Mark George and Paul Higgins.

In total, 45 riders are involved, riding over 1,000km across 7 days through mountainous and cold Tasmania. In total, we aim to raise approximately $1 million before and during the ride.

The major charity beneficiaries are Starlight Foundation and Very Special Kids, both of which have close and personal ties.

Starlight Children’s Foundation has been a Chain Reaction supported charity since the ride’s foundation in 2007. Funds from Chain Reaction Challenge help SCF to operate the Starlight Express Room 7 days a week at the Monash Children’s Hospital. The Starlight Express Room is the place where kids can forget about being sick in hospital and just be kids. No doctors. No treatments. Just play.

Very Special Kids cares for children with life-threatening conditions by providing a children’s hospice and professional support services to families. Chain Reaction funds will be spent directly on undertaking a major upgrade the 20-year-old hospice, bringing it in-line with modern medical support so they can support more kids and families, including teens and adolescents who are living beyond expectations.
