Day 4 – McLaren Vale to the Barossa

Day 4 of the Chain Reaction Challenge — the point where the legs protest, the mind wavers, but confidence quietly builds. Rolling out of McLaren Vale, we knew we were in for a big one: 155km and more than 1,800 metres of elevation gain stood between us and the Barossa.

The early kilometres lulled us into a rhythm as the route wound through postcard-perfect countryside. Vineyards stretched into the distance, framed by blue skies and the kind of weather you only hope for on a ride like this. But make no mistake, this was no sightseeing spin. Four days in, the fatigue is real. Legs are tender, bodies are sore, and every climb demands respect.

Passing through Meadows and Strathalbyn, the challenge began to assert itself. The rolling terrain never really lets up, forcing us to dig deep and manage our effort carefully. Yet something had shifted. Where Day 1 was nerves and anticipation, Day 4 carried a sense of belief. We were tired, yes — but also stronger, more connected, and quietly confident we belonged here.
A welcome stop for lunch at Mount Torrens offered both physical refuelling and a mental reset. Conversations flowed easily, support was everywhere, and the shared purpose of the ride felt stronger than ever. It’s in these moments, off the bike, that Chain Reaction really comes to life — a reminder that it’s not just about what happens in the saddle, but the camaraderie, encouragement and shared purpose that keep us moving forward.

That purpose sits at the heart of the Chain Reaction Challenge. Every kilometre ridden and every dollar raised helps change lives for children in need through our charity partners, So They Can and BaptistCare HopeStreet. Whether it’s access to education, safe housing, or vital support services, the riders’ efforts — on the road and through tireless fundraising — make a real and lasting difference. Having reached and exceeded $600,000 by the end of Day 3, we continue to build on that total with every kilometre ridden and every metre climbed.
The afternoon push across to the Barossa delivered one of the most memorable landscapes of the week. Endless vineyards, long open roads, and a sense of history under every wheel. It was a reminder of why this ride is so special — not just for the kilometres covered, but for the experience shared.

As Phil Tanner so perfectly put it:
“It’s the 1%’s that make Chain Reaction stand out from the crowd.”

Day 4 embodied that idea — the encouragement on the climbs, the spectacular countryside, the perfectly timed rest stops, the quiet words when someone needed them most. These are the small things that turn a hard ride into an unforgettable journey.

The bodies are tired, but the spirits are strong. And with the Barossa behind us, we roll into the second half of the challenge knowing we’re capable of more than we imagined.
