Inside the Peloton Day Two

13 Mar 2022
I know Richie Porte trains here but most of us aren’t built like Richie

The weather was perfect again today; it’s a nice change for us Sydney siders compared to all of the rain we’ve had over the last two weeks. 26 degrees, slight breeze, crisp air, all good.

It sounds like it would be a beautiful thing to do. Exploring with friends the roads that helped turn Richie into the superstar of cycling that he is today, problem is we don’t climb like Richie!

We started the day feeling pretty good. A relatively short ride yesterday of around 90kms so the legs still feel pretty fresh, thankfully because the training leading up to this event has been severely compromised from all of that rain, and I’m sorry I just cannot sit on a wind trainer for six hours like some of my crazy friends.

We climbed uphill for about 50 kms to our first drink stop. Duncan doing a fantastic job, riding strong and putting alot of us to shame. He then sat on the front for 20kms towards the lunch stop. The views from the lookout were stunning.

After a quick break we headed back out to lunch. 2 hours of riding, another 50 kms. The terrain was lumpy, up and down the chain ring, energy sapping. The last climb before we stopped was brutal, even the strong riders said “that was tough”. The riders eventually found a nice patch of grass to lie down on, under the trees, what could be better. I think Duncan actually fell asleep. Harvs was complaining that his gearing was out of whack.

Lunch all finished and we set off for home. 35kms, two medium climbs and then a fast descend back into Launceston. A solid day of climbing, 132kms 7 hours and now we’re done.

We’re all in pain but knowing we’re riding for kids in need makes every pedal stroke worth it. Another phenomenal day with the gang from Chain Reaction.
