Rolling out of Rotorua, the countryside immediately put on a show. Long open roads, rolling hills, and that classic New Zealand backdrop made it one of those days where you have to remind yourself to look up and take it all in. It’s easy to get caught in the effort, but the views made it worth every pedal stroke.
As the ride settled in, the group opened things up with a bit of “free play” - and that’s when the fun really started.
There were attacks flying, small groups forming, and some proper racing throughout the bunch. You could feel the energy lift as riders tested themselves and each other, pushing the pace and enjoying the chance to stretch the legs. It brought a different dynamic to the day - less about holding formation, more about having a crack and seeing what everyone had.
What stood out most, though, was the spirit of the group.
A Group Riding for the Right Reasons
This year’s crew has been nothing short of outstanding. There’s a genuine sense that everyone is here for the same reason - riding for the cause and pushing themselves to make a difference.
The Chain Reaction Challenge Foundation brings together people from all walks of life, but out on the road, it becomes one team. Whether it’s attacking off the front, chasing wheels, or regrouping after a hard effort, there’s a shared respect and support that makes this ride something special.
It’s not just about the kilometres or the racing - it’s about what we’re riding for.
Every turn of the pedals is helping raise funds for kids in need, and that purpose sits behind everything we do out here. Days like today, where the legs feel good and the group is firing, are a reminder of how lucky we are to be part of it.
