Day 1 of the Chain Reaction Challenge in New Zealand is officially in the books and what a way to kick things off.
Rolling out of Auckland this morning, there was a mix of excitement, nerves, and a strong sense of purpose across the group. It didn’t take long for that energy to turn into momentum as we hit the open roads heading toward Hamilton.
The scenery was nothing short of spectacular. Classic New Zealand countryside, rolling green hills, wide open spaces, and views that make you forget you’re working hard on the bike. It’s one of those rides where you’ve got to remind yourself to look up and take it all in.
What really stood out today, though, was the group.
From the outset, everyone gelled incredibly quickly. The bunch found its rhythm early and before long we were working together seamlessly, pushing along at a lightning pace all the way into Hamilton. It’s always impressive to see how quickly a group can come together, but today felt like we’d been riding side by side for weeks.
A huge shoutout to the first-year riders. They absolutely brought their A-game. Stepping into an environment like this isn’t easy, but every one of them adapted quickly, contributed to the pace, and rode like seasoned campaigners. It sets a strong tone for the days ahead.
And while the riding, scenery, and camaraderie are incredible — it’s important to remember why we’re here. Every kilometre we ride is about raising funds for charities that support kids in need. In this year’s case, we are supporting The Royal Prince Charles Hospital Foundation. That purpose sits behind every early start, every climb, and every push when the legs are burning. It’s what brings this group together and drives the effort you see out on the road.
There’s already a great vibe building within the group. Plenty of banter, support on the road, and a shared focus on making a real difference.
Day 1 done. Legs are feeling it, but spirits are high.
Bring on Day 2 💪
